Competitions
Ray won the Junior Division of the TexASTA Concerto Competition and performed the first movement of Hindemith's Der Schwanendreher with orchestra at the 2023 Texas Music Educators Association Convention. Elaina, Mayumi, Arthur, Abbie, Emmanuel, Rishi, and Christina all received I ratings for their solos at Region XII UIL's competition. Grace, Jasmine, Turner, Isabel and Ray all received I ratings for their solos at Region 29's UIL's competition. Ray, Turner, Rishi and Christina, earned I ratings for their solos at Texas UIL State Solo competition! Ray and Rishi received Outstanding Performer recognition for their solos. Region and State Orchestra Placements Ray and Christina ranked #1 and #10 in 2022's All-State auditions and were placed in the 2023 TMEA All-State Symphony Orchestra. Turner was ranked #32 and was placed in the 2023 TMEA All-State Philharmonic Orchestra. Caroline was selected by competitive audition to participate in Region XII’s Bravo Orchestra. Elaina and Mayumi were selected by competitive audition to participate in Region XII’s Concertino Orchestra., and Elaina placed first chair. Matthew, Sophia, Isabel, Grace, Turner and Ray were all selected by competitive audition to participate in Region 29 Orchestras, and Ray placed as Principal Viola. Abbie, Rishi, Emmanuel, and Christina were selected by competitive audition to participate in Region XII’s Symphony, and Christina placed as Principal Viola. YOSA Principals Freudigman Studio violists served as Principal Viola in three of YOSA’s seven orchestras this season. Mayumi - Sinfonietta Elaina/Rishi - Concertino Christina - Philharmonic Summer Activities Emmanuel was selected by competitive audition to be a 2023 Cactus Pear Music Festival Young Artist. Christina was selected to serve as a Bexar County Commissioners Court Arts Intern with the Cactus Pear Music Festival. Turner was accepted to study at Interlochen's Viola Intensive. Ray received a fellowship to study at the Aspen Music Festival and School. Special Performances and Recognitions Turner performed the first movement of Stamitz Concerto with the Hill Country Youth Orchestra Emmanuel became the second recipient of The Texas Violin Shop Scholarship and received a viola and bow to support his music study. Emmanuel was also selected to perform as a soloist on YOSA's Rising Stars 2023 Spring Recital. Ray was selected to perform Mendelssohn Octet in a side-by-side performance with Camerata San Antonio. Rishi performed with his quartet on Camerata San Antonio's annual string quartet master class.

Turner will perform with the Philharmonic Orchestra. Christina and Ray will perform with the Symphony Orchestra. Extra special note: this is Ray's FOURTH year in the top Texas All-State Orchestra! Ray has been selected to participate in the 2022 National Youth Orchestra of the United States (Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute). As part of this prestigious ensemble made up of students from across the US, he will tour Europe and perform with conductor Daniel Harding and cellist Alisa Weilerstein. High school students in the studio are having a big year for performances with orchestra! Justin will perform Telemann Concerto with Health Careers High School orchestra for UIL competition. Aidan will perform Bruch Romanze and Ray will perform Hindemith Trauermusik with the Brandeis High School orchestras at the National Orchestra Festival at Lincoln Center in NYC! Region and State Orchestra Placements Ray also was placed as Principal Viola of the Texas All-State Symphony, the first San Antonio violist to be placed first in the state since 1983. Grace, Sophia, Isabel, Aidan, and Justin were all selected by competitive audition to participate in Region 29 Orchestras, and Ray placed as Principal Viola. Emmanuel was selected by competitive audition to participate in Region XII’s Symphony. Elaina placed first chair for Region XII’s 7th grade Region Orchestra. Elaina - Sinfonietta Sophia - Repertory Ray - Philharmonic As we finally start to transition back into in-person lessons, I am looking forward to interacting with my students without screens and microphones and headphones! Even with the challenges of not being to meet face to face, the studio has made some great achievements this year. Not every achievement is as easy to quantify as the list below! and I am so proud of the work each and every student has done during this difficult year! Students range from 5th-12th grade.
Texas All-State Orchestras Ray placed 6th in the Texas All-State Symphony Orchestra; Calla placed as Principal in the Texas All-State Sinfonietta. Region Orchestras Lincoln placed in the Region XII 7th grade Orchestra Brennan placed in the Region XII 8th grade Orchestra Calla and Emmanuel placed in the top Region XII High School Orchestras Aidan, Justin and Ray placed into the top Region XXIX High School Orchestras. Ray placed as Principal. UIL Competitions Elaina, Lincoln, Calla, Aidan and Ray all achieved I ratings in their region’s UIL solo contests. Youth Orchestras of San Antonio Prelude: Matthew Capriccio: Brennan and Marissa Concertino: Emmanuel (principal) Philharmonic Yellow: Aidan and Justin Philharmonic Red: Calla (principal) and Ray Summer Justin and Calla are the two viola Young Artists at the 2021 Cactus Pear Music Festival. Calla is doubling on piano! Ray will participate in the Online Summer String Intensive, studying with some of the very best viola professors in the world and will also participate in the 2021 NYO2 program at Carnegie Hall. |
